The truth about toxins..

We give you the low down on the importance of safe, clean products.

Every single day we put a plethora of products onto our skin and inevitably into our bloodstream. From sunscreens to makeup to hairspray. It all adds up like to a daily cocktail of chemicals and toxins that the body then has to deal with by processing and eliminating.

Reading the labels of your skincare products is paramount to knowing what you’re putting on your skin.

We’ve put together a list that breaks down the important factors around choosing skincare and ingredients, and some nasty ingredients to watch out for..

Twenty-six seconds is all it takes for the ingredients in your personal care products to enter your bloodstream.

Our ethos around beauty and wellness at Eco Spa is simple; allow mother nature to prepare, provide for and protect us, as we thrive in health. Naturally, our body responds intuitively to the highest quality of most things; fresh air, clean water and adequate sleep.

The same goes for our approach to skincare; keep it simple. What we put on our skin, into our blood stream and what we ingest all affect the natural systems of the body. The foods we eat and the products we use every day affect our health and quality of life.

Limiting the amount of harsh chemicals that sit in your bathroom cabinet mean your body has to fight less to eliminate them out.

We know that much of what goes onto the skin is absorbed. You only have to put a clove of garlic underneath the foot or between the toes to recognise how quick the body’s absorption ability really is. Yep, it’s pretty quick!

Some labels contain words that are near impossible to pronounce and it can make you want to put the bottle/jar down and throw your hands up in the air. But it’s important to recognise the ingredients on the back of your moisturisers or serums as much as it is to read the labels of the food items in your pantry.

There are many well known nasty ingredients commonly found on the conventional skincare market. You don’t have to be a scientist to work out that something is going to be more toxic than natural, you just have to recognise some prefixes in some words.

For example;

Parabens are used as a preservative, to prolong the life of a product. These oestrogen-mimicking preservatives are widely found in cosmetics, deodorants and other skin care products. They can often be hidden under harder to determine words listed on a skincare product. These are sometimes shown as Methyl, Ethyl, Butyl, Propyl, Isopropyl.. giving pattern to the letters ‘‘..thyl’’,

Sulfates are likely to show up in foaming and lathering products like shampoo, cleansers and body washes. They are a skin and eye irritant, they are known endocrine disruptors, are a neurotoxin and a suspected carcinogen.

To avoid sulfates, look out for these culprits: sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and ammonium laureth sulfate (ALES)

Choose your products wisely and determine the level of toxic harm or chemical threat by knowing your ingredients first.

As we age, our hormones naturally alter. It’s all part of the changing process our body undergoes over time. But did you know that the ingredients in your skincare also play a large role in the changes in your hormones?

Many generic skincare products contain ingredients including parabens, sulfates, phthalates, triclosan and oxybenzone - which are toxins that have often been discovered to hang around for longer within the human body.

Research shows these chemical ingredients are hormone disruptors and that some may even be carcinogenic. Many countries in Europe have banned them altogether, whereas other countries do not have as high regulations or have alternative systems in place to allow them to go unregulated.

One of the biggest types of toxins is endocrine disrupting chemicals, known as EDCs.

EDCs include substances in our environment, water, food and personal care products that interfere with the body’s own production, transport, breakdown, binding and eradication of hormones. Personal exposure to EDCs eventually affects the natural balance and stability of the body, and therefore the endocrine system.

Looking further down the line, this then means long term use of harsh, toxic ingredients can affect fertility levels in both women and men.

Butylated hydroxyanisole or BHA is commonly used as an antioxidant and preservative in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, and some clinical studies have shown that high exposure to BHA and may disrupt both the male and female reproductive systems.

Remember, what you put in (and on) your body, ultimately has to be processed by the body. Choosing safe and natural ingredients will ensure you aren’t overloading your natural state and creating havoc for your hormones and endocrine system.

Almost every skin care or beauty product has this on the label, but how many of us really follow the instruction?

The best way to determine if you’re going to have an adverse reaction to a product is to do a patch test.

This is simple: choose an area on your skin (usually a non-sensitive part like the inside of your forearm) and use only a small amount of the product.

Cover and leave for 24hrs. This will allow your body to interact with the ingredients on a smaller scale and will highlight any sensitivity or reaction you may have on a larger scale if you were to use more.
