The 12-step morning ritual of Self love..
(that you’ll want to set your alarm earlier for!)
We delve deeper into the realm of everyday self care rituals, starting with your first thoughts of the day.
How you start your morning matters. It can make all the difference between a good & a great day, and ultimately it sets the tone for how you feel throughout the day.
We’ve come up with a simple yet effective 12-step self love morning ritual to add to your daily routine that’s easy to follow and sure to set you up for a joyful, intentional and balanced day ahead..
1. WAKE UP GENTLY..
Eliminate your mobile phone! This will ensure you aren’t being notified by text message, email, or an alert on your social media upon opening your eyes.
If the first thing you do when you wake up is read notifications from the outside world, it’s sure to fire up the cortisol levels within the body before your feet have even touched the floor.
Setting an alarm on an old fashioned alarm clock is the first step in maintaining peace in your morning. Get into the habit of leaving your phone out of the bedroom, and find yourself a real alarm clock - there are so many gorgeous styles available to buy anyway!
2. DRINK A FULL GLASS OF WATER..
Sit up, and drink a full glass of water as your legs are hanging over the side of the bed. You’ll be feeling sleepy, you might notice some tightness in your spine, but at this stage, all you’re doing is drinking a glass of water.
There’s something about starting the day with hydration that makes all the difference in our bodies. It helps begin the elimination process after being still all night, but it also helps to wake you up.
Notice how you feel before and after the glass of water; no doubt your level of alertness has increased immensely.
3. LIST 10 THINGS YOU’RE GRATEFUL FOR..
Before any worrying thoughts can creep in, and before your mind starts making lists of all the things you need to do, create your gratitude list.
Listing out what you’re grateful for, even if it’s just beginning with 3 things, and slowly increasing the list each day, will help to put things into perspective.
Your list can contain anything at all, whatever brings you joy and whatever makes you feel happy. You might be grateful for your comfy bed, the abundance that your job brings, the sound of your children laughing - whatever it is that you’re thankful for in that moment, write it down.
4. ORAL HYGIENE..
Overnight, the mouth becomes a resting place for bacteria. Naturally, this will lead to halitosis or ‘‘morning breath’’.
In order to remove bacteria and feel fresh, it’s important to practice healthy hygiene habits early on. Rinsing your mouth will help to wash out the bacteria the mouth is holding, and will improve overall oral health.
Follow with regular teeth brushing and you’ll feel fresh and cleansed in no time.
OIL PULLING - WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
The ancient Indian science of Ayurveda pre-dates Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Modern Medicine. Ayurvedic medicine is all about creating and maintaining balance within the body.
The practice of oil pulling, entails swishing a tablespoon of oil (sesame or coconut) around the mouth, without swallowing, for 10-15mins.
This draws the toxins out of the gums, inner cheeks, tongue and throat into the oil itself. In Ayurvedic teachings, it is believed that doing this daily, upon rising and before eating, will dramatically improve not only your oral health, but your overall health.
While assisting in oral detoxification and cleaning, oil pulling also leads to whiter teeth and the curing of many diseases like arthritis, asthma, infections and skin problems, liver and stomach problems, headache or migraines and throat infections
After 10-15mins of oil pulling, carefully spit the oil into a tissue and discard it into a bin. Try to avoid spitting the oil down the sink or you’ll have some issues to deal with (namely clogged pipes!) in the long run.
5. STRETCH/MOVE YOUR BODY FOR 5MINS..
Now, it’s time to wake up the spine. A simple set of stretches will work wonders on your back after being still and horizontal for 8 hours.
Gently lift the arms over head and feel the length in the body, then fold forward gently with bent knees and release the tension in your shoulders.
SALUTE THE SUN - WITH YOGA.
Bring yoga into your morning routine by slowly moving the body in a sequence of moves called Surya Namasakar, also known as Sun Salutations.
This is a beautiful way to move the body in a three-dimensional plane and to wake up the spine. It includes balancing, gentle back bends, stretching of the hamstrings and calves, heart openers and lower back care.
Encourage your breath to flow steady with each move. You can follow the simple sun salutation flow here.
6. HOT WATER + LEMON..
Drinking lemon juice with warm water every morning helps in maintaining the pH balance of the body.
Lemon juice acts as a digestive and a detoxifying agent and helps in cleaning the liver leading to better digestive health, which is why it' is perfect on an empty stomach in the morning.
It helps fight infection, maintains digestive health, and is also a popular remedy for many kinds of skin problems ranging from acne, rashes and wrinkles to dark spots.
7. DRY BODY BRUSHING..
This is the next step in your Self Love Morning Ritual. Not only is dry body brushing great for shedding dead skin cells (and encouraging new cell renewal), it’s also a great way to connect with your body.
The pressures of looking a certain way in this modern era (magazines, social media etc) play a huge role on the way we feel in our skin.
Body brushing helps to bridge that gap between our mind and body. Our physical form is isn’t just for looks. We feel our limbs, we circulate the blood beneath the skin and we massage our organs gently from the outside, creating an intentional, moving meditation for the body.
Lovingly feeling and tending to our skin helps to reignite that connection between mind, body and spirit and helps to improve our acceptance and gratitude for the body we have been given.
Adding some positive affirmations for your body while you brush, is a beautiful practice as well. Repeating a sentence or affirmation for each part of the body as you work from the feet upwards, helps to bind that connection. You might like to try:
‘‘ I love and accept my self ‘‘
‘‘ I am beautiful. I am whole. I am worthy ‘‘
‘‘ I am grateful for my body, for all that it does for me ‘‘
‘‘ I love and cherish my limbs, for they have taken me everywhere in this life ‘‘
‘‘ This beautiful skin protects and houses my life force within ‘‘
8. HYDRO THERAPY IN THE SHOWER..
Take that gorgeous body of yours into a refreshing shower. Showering in the AM wakes us up even more. The humidity of the hot water helps to steam the pores in the skin and relieves congestion within the sinuses and lungs.
ESSENTIAL OIL TIP
Placing a regular flannel / face washing towel onto the floor of the shower and adding 2-3 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil is an amazing addition to your morning shower.
Stand with both feet on the flannel and allow the heat of the shower to release the vapours of the essential oil.
The soles of the feet will awaken as the your circulation is stimulated, lymph movement increased and your immune system is improved.
9. MASSAGE WITH AFFIRMATIONS..
It’s easy to follow regular habits and just jump out of the shower, drying off without thinking. Take this time to use those body positive affirmations from before, affirming the gratitude for your body, for your skin, for you.
Using a body oil or moisturiser, hydrate the skin while appreciating everything you see in the mirror and feel with your hands.
10. SKIN CARE RITUAL..
We do it every morning and every night. It can become so habitual we aren’t even present, and it usually goes: cleanse, tone, moisturise, go.
This time, take a moment between each step. Appreciate your skin. Look into your eyes and see the youth and vitality of your face without makeup.
Add in a facial exfoliant after cleansing. Perhaps a hydrating masque to replenish the plumpness of your complexion.
Use an undereye cream and take it slow. Observe the difference of the skin on your face to the skin around your eyes.
Make this time about you - nourish your skin, your complexion and your face will reflect the care and attention throughout the day.
If you want to put on some makeup, then go ahead and enjoy that fun process! Watch the transformation. Accept yourself before and after.
11. FUEL THE BODY WITH BREAKFAST..
You’ve treated your body so beautifully already, now it’s ready to receive fuel and nutrition. Breaking the fast you have undergone during the night, it’s important to fuel your body properly.
Choosing a clean, nutrient breakfast is important to your day.
Include healthy fats (avocado), nutrient dense carbohydrates (leafy green vegetables) and unadulterated grains like brown rice, quinoa and amaranth. Choose clean proteins like mushrooms and beans to ensure your energy levels are steady until lunchtime.
12. DRESS TO REFLECT YOUR MOOD..
This is now the icing on the cake (yes, you’re the cake). You get to adorn yourself in a way that reflects how you want to feel throughout the day and how you want to be seen.
Check in with your current emotional state, how you feel or how you want to feel - and choose your outfit accordingly.
